Minimally Invasive Myoma Therapy - Myomectomy, UAE, and MRgFUS
Needs Assessment and Description
In addition to myomectomy, there are now multiple options
for conservative treatment of uterine fibroids. These options
include medical management, uterine artery embolization
(UAE) and magnetic resonance-guided focused
ultrasound (MRgFUS). Unfortunately, there remains a lack of
understanding as to which treatment option is appropriate
for the particular clinical situation. This live session for
physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals will
explore the prevailing evidence for various treatment
options for uterine fibroids.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able
to:
- Describe the techniques of UAE and MRgFUS.
- Summarize the prevailing evidence regarding the impact
of myomectomy, MRgFUS, UAE and medical
management for uterine fibroids on subsequent
pregnancy outcomes.

TEST QUESTION:
A 35-year-old woman who recently suffered her second
miscarriage has an impinging 6-cm fibroid. Other workup for
miscarriage is negative. After participating in this session, in
my practice I will recommend the following treatment for
her fibroid:
- No treatment; try to conceive again
- Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist for
three months to shrink the fibroid and then attempt
pregnancy
- Uterine artery embolization (UAE)
- MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS)
- Myomectomy
- Not applicable to my area of practice.
