    (July 2008)

  • News from NICHD (from the Spring 2008 ASRM News) (July 2008)

  • Program Announcement (PA) Title: PA-08-103 (P01) ; PA-08-104 (R01) Adverse Outcomes of Assisted Reproductive Technologies
    Receipt Date: Standard
Sponsor/Co-Sponsor(s): The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
Purpose: This NICHD-wide Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages investigator-initiated applications designed to study the ways in which assisted reproductive technologies (ART) may directly affect eggs, sperm or preimplantation embryos that could, in turn, lead to adverse outcomes during fetal development, the perinatal period, childhood, adulthood or even subsequent generations. While most ART offspring appear to be healthy, there are reports of adverse outcomes. This FOA encourages research on human subjects and animal models that can include a wide variety of basic, clinical, behavioral and epidemiological approaches that link reproductive health to overall health and quality of life.

  • Program Announcement: Optimizing Technologies for the Preservation of Fertility (R21) PAR
This FOA, issued by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits applications that propose to develop or enhance technologies designed to increase the fertility preservation options for individuals who are or may become infertile secondary to chronic disease or disease treatment, exposure to environmental or occupational hazards, advanced reproductive age, or genetic predisposition. These technologies may be developed and applied in animal models or clinical studies.

This PAR has one receipt date, which is September 16, 2008. (June 2008)

  • Program Announcement: PA-08-059 (R01); PA-08-060 (R21) Role of Adipose Tissue as an Endocrine Organ in Reproduction and Infertility– standard receipt dates
The National Institute on Child Health and Human Development is interested in stimulating research to better understand the role of adipose tissue in the normal physiological regulation of reproduction, to discern its possible role in the etiology of diseases and disorders that impact fertility, and to probe its potential importance in different racial/ethnic prevalence rates of certain reproductive disorders. Examples of possible projects in response to the initiative:
How sex steroids modulate adipose tissue biology with a focus on sex and gender-based differences in the synthesis and secretion of adipokines that could impact fertility status
The role of adipose tissue in mediating the effects of changed energy status (i.e., over/under nutrition, exercise, etc.) on reproduction; The role of adipose tissue dysfunction in the genesis of human reproductive diseases and disorders; An examination of possible racial/ethnic differences in adipocyte biology and pathobiology that could account for an increased incidence of fertility problems in some minority populations

  • NIH has increased the incentives for scientists to serve as chartered or permanent members of its peer review groups. These researchers will now have more flexibility in submitting their own grant applications. An NIH Guide Notice published last week announced that these reviewers now will have the option to submit R01, R21 or R34 applications at any time. According to the NIH Center for Scientific Review, "This new policy was developed to better compensate chartered reviewers, who can be disadvantaged by deadlines that force them to develop their own applications while reviewing those submitted to NIH by others." http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-026.html (January 2008)

  • Fragile X Pre-mutation and Ovarian Function (R01) solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations that propose basic, clinical or translational research on the effects of the Fragile X pre-mutation on ovarian function, with a focus on premature ovarian failure or early menopause, in women and/or animal models. http://www.nichd.nih.gov/funding/foa/foa.cfm?select_doctype=PA%2FPAR# (October 2007)
