Senate Passes Genetic Non-DiscriminationI Act; House Is Expected To Approve And President Is Expected To Sign
Today, by unanimous consent of 95-0, the Senate passed the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). This was an amended version of HR 493 which passed the House 420-3 almost a year ago to the day- April 25, 2007. The House is expected to quickly take up the measure again before sending it to President Bush to sign the measure into law.
Until now, a patchwork of state and federal regulations have provided some protection from genetic discrimination, but not clearly and consistently enough to allow Americans to be confident that their genetic information would not be used by health insurers or employers to deny healthcare benefits or influence hiring decisions.
With this legislation, personalized medicine will take a step forward as patients need no longer forgo genetic testing out of fear of repercussions and medical researchers utilizing genetic information will find it easier to recruit participants.
