Late last night, Congressional Appropriators released the details of a bipartisan $1.1 trillion spending package to fund all federal agencies for fiscal year 2014. Importantly, the new spending package spares funding cuts for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

Through the National Human Neural Stem Cell Resource (NHNSCR www.nhnscr.org), an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) biorepository has been created and now has available dozens of fibroblast and iPSC lines derived from patients with idiopathic autism as well as controls and patients with FMR1 gene mutations (both full- and pre-mutations as well as isogenic derivations). Neural stem cells differentiated from these lines are also available. Moreover, full clinical information for each of the lines is available.

Last October, Hurricane Sandy devastated great swaths of the eastern United States. New York City was hit particularly hard, with flooding and power outages following the deluge. When the power went out at New York University’s Langone Medical Center’s ART clinic, patient treatment decisions had to be made quickly for those who were scheduled for egg retrieval and for those whose embryos were developing in incubators.
