From Fertility and Sterility
Puberty progression in girls with Turner syndrome after ovarian tissue cryopreservationThis study looks at the impact of unilateral ovariectomy for ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) on the function of the remaining ovary in girls with Turner syndrome. It found that pubertal development progressed after unilateral ovariectomy for OTC in most girls with Turner syndrome. Hormone replacement therapy was required within a few years for girls with unfavorable parameters before OTC, such as AMH levels <0.50 μg/L. Decisions regarding OTC should be personalized, considering the girl’s preferences and specific characteristics.
From F&S Reports
Impact of follicle size before luteal progesterone supplementation on clinical outcomes of modified natural cycle single frozen embryo transferThis study’s objective is to determine whether follicle size at midcycle transvaginal sonography imaging before luteal progesterone supplementation predicts modified natural cycle single frozen embryo transfer (mNC-SFET) outcomes. In normo-ovulatory women undergoing mNC-SFET with natural endometrial preparation with human chorionic gonadotropin trigger or luteinizing hormone surge to time frozen embryo transfer, lead follicle size before luteal phase supplementation does not impact clinical outcomes such as IR, CPR, SAB rate, or OPR.
F&S Reports recently released a special issue titled, Bridging Studies in Wild Animal Species and Humans to Better Understand, Assist, and Control Reproduction. This special issue focuses on reproduction in wild animal species and explores intriguing connections between research efforts in human and other species. Although human reproductive medicine and animal reproduction are traditionally viewed as distinct fields, there is growing recognition that these domains are deeply intertwined from endocrinology to assisted reproduction. We present this special issue to catalyze dialogue and collaboration among researchers studying reproduction across the many species found on our planet.
From F&S Science
Utilization of a three-dimensional in vitro co-culture system to characterize embryonic mechanisms associated with implantationImplantation success is dependent on timely molecular signaling to establish embryonic apposition, adhesion, and invasion. In an effort to elucidate this critical period in human reproduction, this study is to uses a novel, time-lapse three-dimensional (3D) in vitro co-culture system to characterize the timing of blastocyst development on the initial stages of implantation. Time-lapse 3D in vitro co-culture revealed that the timing of blastocyst development is critical to the initial stages of implantation. The ability of the trophectoderm to expand, orient, and initiate apposition may contribute to the higher likelihood of success as indicated by altered gene expression and regulatory pathways.
From F&S Reviews
Fertoprotective agents and tumor response: a narrative reviewAs advances in cancer therapy have significantly improved mortality rates, there is increasing emphasis on improving quality of life for cancer survivors. One such area of focus is in maintaining fertility, as both chemotherapy and radiation therapy carry significant risks of causing infertility through various mechanisms of gonadal injury. Although fertility preservation options exist, such as sperm or egg banking, they are not always available or indicated for all patients. Fertoprotective agents are proposed substances that may serve to protect the gonad from the harmful impacts of cancer therapy to maintain fertility. However, caution must be taken to evaluate whether these agents could act similarly to protect the tumor from anticancer therapies. This narrative review describes the various mechanisms by which chemotherapy or radiation therapy can cause gonadal harm. It then reviews the available research on fertoprotective agents and their proposed mechanisms of gonadal protection. Finally, it discusses what evidence exists for interaction with cancer therapy for each agent, with an emphasis on opportunities for future research.
